New changes are coming!
There’s change coming to the shelter on 1856 South Loomis. San Jose Obrero Mission and Yollocalli Arts Reach, are now working together to show support to the homeless in Chicago. They have a program that will have the youth at Yollocalli to paint a mural on the side of the SJOM building wall. The program will last for six weeks, and they hope to be painting by the first week of July.
Artwork lead by, Jesus ‘Chucho’ Rodriguez.
Jesus ‘Chucho’ Rodriguez will be the leading artist in this mural, he is a tattoo artist, and has a graffiti style to his artwork. He has selected 15 students that will accompany him in the process of painting such a mural. Coordinator Gabriel Villa said “…it gives the youth the chance to see how much it takes to run a homeless shelter.” The students will get to see how a homeless shelter works, that it’s more than just people giving food, and clothes, that it takes people a lot of hard, dedicated work to bring such a place like this together. SJOM help the homeless get back on track, by helping them obtain jobs in the near future. They told me the overall message of the mural will be that these people that have no home, and have very little, can come to a place like San Jose Obrero Mission, and have a place for support and a place to give them the strength the homeless need to overcome this obstacle.
Update:
Yollocalli has started to set up, by putting there scaffolds up next to the wall at San Jose Obrero Mission on 19th street. We hope they start painting as soon as possible!
