| Having provided overnight shelter for eighteen years, in 1999 SJOM
became a Transitional Shelter.The purpose of the transitional program is
to more effectively assist homeless men in the difficult task of building
stability in their lives.Besides 24-hour living accommodations and three
meals a day, the new program offers participants a broad range of supports
and services.

Transitional Shelter for Homeless
Men
San Jose Obrero Mission provides:
A community-style
setting in which healing and growth can take place.

A comfortable, clean, and safe living environment.

Three healthy meals a day, hot showers, and dormitory style sleeping.

Personal assigned locker space.
-
Case Management Services.
-
Daily Living Skills classes.
-
After-care and follow-up services.
-
Services in both Spanish and English.
-
Referrals to other services including job placement, employment training,
medical and dental, mental helath, substance abuse treatment, legal help,
and housing assistance.
Services are offered on a non-discriminatory basis to men of all
races, religions, sexual orientation, and national origins.

Persons admitted to the transitional program must
enter of their own volition and be documented as homeless.

They must be male, 18 years of age or older and
agree to abide by the program Expectations and Rules.

Individuals will not be admitted if they are:

- under the influence of alcohol
or other drugs;
-
- have medical difficulties
which would impair normal functioning or that would require extensive in-home
medical care;

- are actively suicidal or
homicidal;
-
- pose a threat to person or
property.
Beginning with Fr. David's vision, San Jose
Obrero Mission has for eighteen years been providing shelter for homeless
men here on the near southwest side of Chicago. That work of service
continues.
